On Purpose Living
My Favorite Books

Pick of the Month

This is a real gem. One of the distinguishing features of this remarkable method is that it highlights the importance of friendship in accomplishing the sacred work of taking care of the body. The authors describe the nature and importance of maintaining a faithful buddy system as the major support for accomplishing any goals. They change the word DIET into an acronym and points to a healthy lifestyle instead of to a restricted eating plan (which you know The Good Health Coach never endorses!!). To them, "D" stands for Daily activities, "I" stands for individualized eating plan; "E" stands for Energize your Life; and "T" stands for Think Well. It's a quick read and full of their personal journeys. I'll bet this will become one of your favorites.
This sweet book is chock full of ideas of strategies for dealing with both emotional triggers as well as wyas to create and maintain your motivation toward your new lifestyle.
This book takes the Japanese business model of focusing on small steps toward big changes and translates the ideas toward lifestyle shifts. They help you understand how vital SMALL steps are toward permanent shifts in how you life. Set it next to your New Year's Resolutions, and pick your tiniest next step.
I love this one for it's focus on reasons to enjoy exercise. It has helped me get movement and exercise out of the should column (which never really worked for me anyway) into the I-want-to column. OK, well not every day, but most days, and that's syaing a lot for a world-class, Olympic couch potato.
I came across this book recently at a workshop given by the author, Dr. Edward Abramson. His message focuses on our lost ability to listen to what the body wants, and to be able to provide that. He suggests that it's not what you eat, but how you eat that allows you access to your own body intelligence and can assist you in creating your own ideal size and shape. He also includes additional inforamtion for parents on how to help your child develop and/or keep their own innate body awareness.
